Things to Do
A few ideas for things to do while on vacation...
Take a scenic drive through the spectacular White Mountains. Pack a picnic lunch and take your camera, too! Leave early, enjoy the day, and take lots of deep, refreshing breaths!
Hike a mountain trail. You have quite a few to choose from! The Appalachian Trail runs through the White Mountains, and there are plenty of beginner, intermediate and advanced trails to choose from.
Visit Franconia Notch State Park. Take a look at where the Old Man of the Mountains used to be (sniffle), visit The Basin, Indian Head, The Flume Gorge, and take a tram ride up to the top of Cannon Mountain. Get ideas here: VisitWhiteMountains.com
Find Lost River and the Glacial Caves. A great place for both adults and children, Lost River and Glacial Caves is a beautiful a place where granite walls seem to erupt from the earth and a river plays hide and seek. You can follow Lost River as it appears and disappears through the narrow steep-walled gorge, the tumbled granite crevasses, caverns and falls.
Visit Mount Washington. The highest peak on the Eastern Seaboard, Mount Washington is home to some of the wildest weather recorded in history. It's also home to the Cog Railway, Mount Washington Observatory, Tuckerman Ravine, and the beautiful Mount Washington Hotel and Spa. You can drive to the peak and get the famous bumper sticker, or ride the cog train to the top for a truly unique experience!
Take an Indian Leap. Also known as Agassiz Basin, Indian Leap is a beautiful spot just off Route 112 just outside of Woodstock, NH. It's a great place to have a picnic, swim or take a hike.
Take a Day Trip. Enjoy a day touring other parts of scenic New England! Take a trip to visit the Ben & Jerry's Factory in Vermont, have a lobster dinner in Maine, pack your beach umbrella and hit the sandy New Hampshire seashore, or visit famous Killington Vermont! The possibilities are endless, and our home is located in the middle of it all!
Enjoy some nightlife. In downtown Woodsville, enjoy a few games of candlepin bowling at Allen's Cocktails and Candlepins on Central Street, or grab some ice cream at Slicks. In Woodstock, be sure to check out the Woodstock Inn and Brewery on Main Street (they also have an incredible breakfast menu) or our personal favorite spot in Lincoln, the Common Man Inn.
Go shopping! There are dozens of antique stores, retail outlets, and unique privately owned shops and boutiques scattered throughout the entire White Mountains Region. Check out Woodsville, Wells River, Lincoln, Woodstock, Littleton and Sugar Hill. St. Johnsbury, VT is also a great town to visit for shopping, dining, golf, and historic sites. Be sure to get your moose souvenir!
Spend a day at Big Eddy. Just about a 5 minute drive from our log cabin, Big Eddy is a beautiful swimming hole located in part of the Wild Ammonusuc River where the Swiftwater Covered Bridge crosses it. The river pools over multiple layers of rock forming 4 distinctive swimming areas. Bring your beach towel and bathingsuit!
Spend a day lounging around the cabin. Read a book, take a hike in the woods, enjoy sunrise on the front porch or sunset on the deck. Nap. Enjoy!
